Are we ever really unmotivated?

February 16, 2023

When you think of being motivated… what does it mean to you?

For most of us the idea of feeling motivated has positive connotations. It conjures up someone who is energised towards doing something positive. Rarely do you hear someone say “oh yes, they are such a motivated person” except as a compliment.

But what is motivation?

In reality it’s just the impulse to do something whether that is good or bad. By definition, motivation is the “reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way.” (Oxford English Language.) Not necessarily positive.

It sounds obvious but if you want to boost your motivation you have to get really clear on why you are doing something in the first place. Whether it is boosting your fitness, waking earlier, hosting team meetings or undertaking study if your interest and commitment is flagging go back to “why?”

Why do you want to be fit?

Why do you want to wake earlier?

Why is studying important to you?

Why are you holding these meetings?

Tap into the motivators behind what you do and remind yourself of why.

And if there is no motivation and if you have no “why” then accept the fact it’s very unlikely you will stick to the thing in question… or at least not without it feeling very hard.
